The legacy of the Merchant City's grand townhouses
Many of Glasgow's most celebrated Georgian and Victorian townhouses were originally built for the city's tobacco and shipping merchants — the successful entrepreneurs whose fortunes shaped the Merchant City and Blythswood Hill. Their homes were designed to impress: soaring ceilings, elaborate cornicing and grand staircases that remain highly sought after today.
A number of these properties have since been carefully restored as private residences, and they continue to command some of the strongest prices per square foot in the city whenever they come to market.
